Strip

Strip CoEd at Paragon, that is.

I went there for my maiden bikini wax today - never thought that my first bikini wax (actually, my first wax session, ever) would be when I was four months pregnant. I've never seen the need to subject myself to unnecessary pain, and the one friend I do know who has gotten a Brazilian told me NEVER to go for one as it hurts like hell.

So, what does a bikini wax have to do with pregnancy?

Well, what I wasn't counting on, and didn't realise till now is that pregnancy can cause an increase in hair growth - to quote babycentre.com:

"Hair growth increases for some women during pregnancy, and it can be a source of embarrassment or annoyance. This increased growth may not only be underarm, pubic and leg hair, but abdominal and facial hair, too. "

Apparently, I'm one of the afflicted ones.

And so, before things got any hairy-er, I decided that some pruning was in order. Thus the appointment at Strip today.

I asked for the Strip X, which sounded as if there was no waxing involved (just some clipping) - but the therapist suggested that I do the Strip XX instead. She tried to explain the details in Chinese - but all I wanted to know was how painful it would be. In the end, I just told her that I was pregnant, to take the necessary precautions and do whatever she thought was suitable. I paid a little extra to get a more gentle wax as she suggested. It was over in less than 10 minutes, didn't hurt very much and cost me $34.

Things are much neater and airy-er, so I'll consider going back again - I guess I should be grateful that this hair thing has not extended to my face!

Waxing is very important when pregnant because yes, hair grows much faster! And you'll want to do a Brazilian before you deliver because re-growth is a lot more manageable that way than if you got it unceremoniously shaved by the nurses!!!

But tell them to use the more expensive wax when you do it. You'll have more blood circulating down there so it can get more painful! I did a Brazilian at about 4 months as well and I was like OH F!@&* !!!!

But in preparation for my birth, I've done another and it wasn't as painful cos I asked for the hard wax.

Strip's by far one of the better places to do it and if you're going to do it on a regular basis, buy the re-growth cream. It really helps.

hi dorothy, i have been reading your blog ( drastic-measures & babysung ) for sometime.

i know about you from the show Career BluePrint and read about you in a magazine article.

congrats on your pregnancy and my empathy towards your difficult 1st trimester. mine was not that easy too.

you might wish to check with your gynae to make sure a bikini wax is safe to do during pregnancy and will not induce early labour.

when i was pregnant, i learnt that it is unwise to use the contraption for rectifying inverted nipples when one is near to labour date cos it will induced early labour.

i am not sure if undergoing bikini wax will have any harmful effects but you just might want to play safe and ask your gynae.

just like some women would not dye their hair or have massage therapy during pregnancy, if there are things that are not urgent and can wait till after labour , you might want to postpone to later date.

ondine - thanks for the tip about making sure i do this before delivery. i've heard about the cursory hospital shave, and yeah, i'd rather have it done properly at a nice place like strip. now that i've gone once, i'd like to try the brazilian, but it still sounds really painful - i think i need some time to work up the courage...good luck for your labour and delivery which I know is coming soon!!!
saggs - it's terribly liberating! i think i'm now a convert.
eileen - thanks for the advice, i did some internet checks that said it was OK to do waxing when pregnant. I wouldn't go for any non-pre natal massage or foot reflexology though!
